METAMORPHIC LIGHT

BURY, GREATER MANCHESTER, 2010

Interactive sculptural lighting piece. Each of the 23 polycarbonate columns contains a small sensor at ankle height. As people walk by they activate the sensor which sets off a five second colour changing light sequence. This means that people can walk through the varied height columns and trigger a trail of colour changing light behind them. After 5 seconds a basic colour changing programme takes over again.

The scattering of horizontal coloured bars within the columns references the brick striations on a nearby building and also a ribbon of coloured bars that BDP Architects have created in the floorscape.

Concept

Create a stimulating central feature. I wanted to create an interactive piece that would give pleasure. Each polycarbonate coloumn contains a small sensor at ankle height. As people walk by they activate the sensor which sets off a five second colour changing light sequence. This means that people can walk through the varied height columns and set off a trail of colour changing light behind them. After 5 seconds a basic light changing programme takes over again.

The scattering of horizontal coloured bars within the columns reference the brick striations on a building next to the artwork and also a ribbon of coloured bars BDP Architects have created in the floorscape.

Construction

23 polycarbonate extruded triangular coloumns containing individually programmable LEDs.

23 movement sensors detecting 500mm.

Pre set lighting programme that can be altered by people’s movement at any moment. This can be re programmed wirelessly if required.
